Little Snippets of Gross

I mostly associate bad cleaning skills with my generation, but the former owners of this house have been disproving my little hypothesis. It's not that everything was (and, in some cases, still is) a little dirty. It's FILTHY. Scotch-Brite sponges, people. Maybe even some Comet once or twice a decade.

Here's the ring of scum around the kitchen sink hose:

I got in there with a razor blade and some sandpaper.

And it's clean.

It will be so satisfying to eventually gut the kitchen.

  1. Wow, what a difference! You do know about Bar Keeper's Helper don't you? I hope that your water isn't real hard. Have you noticed your shampoo and soap not sudsing?

  2. I was wondering if the water is hard, too. Since you were able to get the crud off I'm guessing it wasn't mineral deposits, though. Count yourself lucky if you don't have hard water to deal with.

  3. The water isn't very hard. There's a whole house filter in the cellar, but we've been putting the drinking water through the Brita filter too. I'm guessing that scum was about 25% mineral crud and 75% regular crud, especially based on the level of gross in the rest of the sink. But again...abrasive cleaner used at any point in time would have fixed the issue.
